Tissot PRX Powermatic 80

Tissot PRX Powermatic 80

The desert sun hammered down on the unforgiving Mojave. My wrist, typically sheathed in a vintage Speedmaster for this kind of work, felt uncomfortably exposed. Just a Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 this time, a deliberate choice. Not for a photoshoot, but a real-world shakedown. I needed to see if this relatively inexpensive marvel could handle the rigors of a multi-day data collection trip.

You see, for field researchers like myself, durability matters. And while the PRX’s integrated bracelet whispers luxury, its core – the self-winding Powermatic 80 movement – intrigues. The Nivachron hairspring is the key here. Resistant to magnetic fields? Crucial when sifting through miles of electronic waste, like we were. That’s a common threat to watch accuracy, an insidious enemy of timekeeping.

The 80 hours of power reserve? Frankly, it felt excessive. Even with prolonged stretches of limited wrist time, the watch kept ticking flawlessly. A real relief when you’re days from civilization and reliant on accurate time for referencing coordinates and recording precise measurements. The textured dial, a subtle tapestry of sunburst patterns, held up beautifully against the relentless glare, unlike some cheaper alternatives that wash out quickly.

The PRX’s thin profile proved to be another unexpected boon. It slipped neatly under a cuff, preventing snagging during those inevitable moments of scrambling over rocky terrain. The case, a solid chunk of stainless steel, resisted the inevitable scuffs and scrapes. Compared to the more fragile offerings from some entry-level Swiss brands, the PRX feels decidedly built to last.

However, there’s a minor quirk. The integrated bracelet, while stylish, can be a pain to size perfectly for that Goldilocks fit. The half-links are somewhat limited. This meant I had to slightly loosen the bracelet during the hottest parts of the day. A minor inconvenience, frankly, which is easily solved with a quick adjustment at the clasp.

For the aspiring enthusiast on a budget, this Tissot is a steal. For those who need a rugged and reliable timekeeper, consider this a surprisingly capable tool, even in the harshest environments. Go grab one. You won’t regret it.
